  • Mary’s Logan Square 3-Flat

Earlier this year I met Janet, a very talented interior designer who lives in a massive, gorgeous apartment in a vintage Logan Square 3-Flat. After I finished shooting Janet’s place, she introduced me to her upstairs neighbor Judie, a freelance photo stylist, and it wasn’t too long before I returned to photograph her equally amazing space (you can read all about it in last week’s issue of Time Out Chicago). Earlier this fall, I returned to the 3-Flat yet again to photograph the third unit – Mary’s apartment, which I also love and which has apparently changed very little since she and her late husband George bought the building in 1969. Prior to that, Mary, George and their three children lived in a nearby apartment that Mary’s parents owned, although they had begun searching for a more spacious home with modern amenities in the suburbs. As Im selecting fabrics for my own apartment Im realizing how difficult it is to commit to something when there are so many fabulous designs and textiles out there.  Ive come across several lines that I absolutely love so I thought Id highlight one that stands out and that I keep coming back to..Katherine Rally Textiles.  Her collection is somewhere in the middle of a modern geometric and a hand printed batik which is the perfect balance especially if youre looking to coordinate with a more traditional floral.

Michigan trees have had a bad run of luck. Heat and drought last summer, disease and insects have taken a toll.

Even white-tailed deer designated as the official state game animal in 1997 thanks to a group of Zeeland fourth-graders, have been less than endearing. The drawn-out winter has forced deer and other woodland critters to prey on young trees with reckless abandon.

Perhaps this is why two key tree-planting dates occur in April. First comes Earth Day, on April 22. Four days later, Michigan and many other states celebrate Arbor Day. This tree-planting holiday falls on the last Friday in April, or April 26 this year. President Richard Nixon in 1970 proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day.

Every state in the U.S. has an official Arbor Day in which residents are encouraged to plant and care for trees. The late April date coincides with the ideal time for tree planting in many states but not all.

Lidia’s Homestyle Meals at Whole Foods

Not many would schlep across the Hudson, taking on traffic and tolls, or trains and taxis for a luncheon serving pre-packed options from a supermarket refrigerator section.

But everything changes when the name and face on the packaging belong to Lidia Bastianich and she is delivering ready-made meals created in an exclusive partnership with Whole Foods Markets.
