A handmade quilt is thing to be treasured and you want to take the best possible care of it. Quilts last longer when they are seldom washed or dry-cleaned. Quilts which are dusty, but not soiled can be cleaned in gentle ways:
Resort to the time-honored method of airing the quilt. This removes dust and keeps the quilt fresh without stretching its fibers. Hang a dry quilt outdoors on a line out of direct sunlight and let the fresh air do its magic. It is even better if you have parallel clothes lines; drape the quilt over several clothes lines, so that its fibers won’t be stretched by hanging down.
Dusty quilts can also be vacuumed. Place screen or netting over your quilt to protect the fabric from getting sucked into the vacuum and use the brush attachment to gently remove the dust.
If you have access to a clothes dryer with an air setting (no heat), place the quilt in it and let it spin for about 10 minutes to remove the dust. Never subject your quilt to a dryer’s heat cycle.
