Zippers for Spandex

If you are working with Spandex for the first time, I recommend that you choose a pattern that does not need a zipper. Zippers can be tricky to put in non-stretch fabrics and they are much more difficult to put into a stretchy fabric such as Spandex.

If you do put a zipper in Spandex, you should change to a fresh needle before sewing the zipper in. The straight stitch needle plate I mentioned in my previous post is a great idea when attempting to put a zipper into Spandex. It will help you avoid many headaches. Of course, you should use a special zipper foot.

Because Spandex is so delicate, the easiest way to insert a zipper may be by hand rather than machine. I know, many of us avoid hand sewing like the plague, but the extra time it takes can save you frustration in the long run. It much better to take time to hand insert a zipper than to risk snagging or stretching your fabric while inserting a zipper by machine.
