The collaboration between Yael Mer & Shay Alkalay led to the founding of Raw Edges, a design studio with a clever and original portfolio. For today we chose to present their project called Hole in the Floor and consisting of a series of ingenious shelving units. Based on the idea of things unexpectedly ending (in a physical sense), the unusual furniture pieces resemble vertical drawers which were literally sliced at the bottom. The impression a viewer gets is-as the name of the project suggests- that of a hole in the floor.

Nominations for Design of the Year Award announced

The Olympic torch, the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress and an earthquake-proof table are among the designs nominated for the Design of the Year Award 2012.

The longlist, which goes on show at the Design Museum in London next month, celebrates the quality and diversity of design work from around the world in seven categories: architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphics, product and transport.

As well as showing some of the best creative work produced over the last year, many of the nominated designs also give a fascinating insight into the event’s and concerns that have dominated the pubic consciousness.

Is the pH really that important?

Well only if you want healthy plants, otherwise you don’t need to worry about it. Plants can suffer from nutrient deficiencies, even with a fresh and perfectly balanced nutrient solution if the pH is out of range. Kind of like how you can freezes to death in full sunlight at the north pole, or drink all the salty seawater you want and still suffer or even die of dehydration . Even when one variable is sufficient, another variable can cause a big problem. Think of it like being really hungry, and there’s a nice big juicy hamburger just out of reach.
