Home Decor: Button, button, who’s got the button?

May 8, 2011 Posted Under: Home Improvement Today

This blog is normally all about home decor, fabrics and other interior design ideas.  But this button floral idea was just too cute to pass up!  The excellent how-to can be found here and is made available from Jones Design Company.

This clever use of buttons makes it possible to re-use all of those leftover buttons that you have been accumulating for years.  You know, the ones that come with a shirt or jacket that you haven’t worn in years or all those old buttons you cut off of clothing before you give it away.  Maybe you are lucky enough, as I am, to have a box full of buttons that your mother and grandmother saved for years.  I loved to play with those buttons as a kid and my daughter loved to count and sort them when she was a toddler and they are one of my most beloved treasures.  How fun to showcase some of them in this fashion.

Please share any of your “button” artwork with all of us by sending a link to your masterpiece in the comment section.  It will be fun to see how creative I already know you are.

The Topaz is a compact, economical no-frills plan, with just under 1,100 square feet of living space. It makes an ideal starter home for a young family, but might also suit the needs of singles or couples who don’t want to spend their spare time taking care of a big house.

Tile roofing, varied rooflines and stucco detailing combine to create an interesting yet uncluttered exterior. A single square column supports one corner of the front porch, adding a touch of classic elegance.

The floor plan is laid out in a perfect rectangle, another affordability factor.

Light Up My Life

May 2, 2011 Posted Under: Home Improvement Articles

Warm weather is FINALLY here! And I am looking forward to cleaning off the porch and putting the porch furniture out there and on the patio. Candlelight is so sweet on a summer’s night, creating just the right ambiance I think. But they blow out so easily, wax flying everywhere. Not so with these Egyptian-inspired ceramic lanterns at Viva Terra. The small is 6″ in diameter and 8″ high, the medium 8″ in diameter and 12″ high and the large is 10″ around and 14″ high. Prices range from $35 to $79, depending on the size.

Home Decor: Decorating a nursery

Apr 29, 2011 Posted Under: Home Improvement Today

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and for those new “Moms in waiting” decorating the nursery can be one of the most exciting tasks.

Like most rooms in your home, a nursery needs to be first and foremost, functional.  There are several must-have items you will need:

  • For obvious reasons, a crib is a necessity.  Today’s designs range from soft and romantic canopy cribs to sleek and modern metal cribs.  Many models also feature beds that can “grow” with your baby into a toddler bed, a twin bed and, ultimately, a headboard for a double bed.
  • A changing table and/or dresser for storage and to make those necessary diaper changes easier on the back and safer for the baby.
  • A rocking chair or glider will provide a comfortable and cozy spot for late night feedings and story time when the child gets older.

Once the functional items are in place, the fun begins and it is time to add some personality:

  • Artwork will add color to the room and provide creative stimulation for your baby.  Consider a mural, a grouping of colorful paintings, fabric covered letters  or three dimensional pieces like your framed christening gown, for example, or Dad’s childhood baseball glove in an acrylic shadowbox.
  • Something soft under your feet makes those chilly three a.m. feedings so much mor
